Why silk?
Your pillow is where you spend around a third of your life. Choosing what rests against your hair and skin each night can turn an everyday necessity into a simple act of self-care.
Gentle on your hair
Silk’s naturally smooth surface creates less friction than conventional cotton. Rather than catching and pulling as you move during the night, it allows your hair to glide more freely. This can help reduce tangles, frizz and sleep-related creasing, helping your hair feel smoother in the morning.
Kind to your skin
The same smooth surface is gentle on the delicate skin of your face. With less friction and tugging during the night, silk provides a soft and comfortable place to rest—even for sensitive skin.
Less absorbent than cotton
Cotton is naturally absorbent and can take up moisture and oils from your hair and skin. Silk is generally less absorbent, helping your skin and hair retain more of their natural moisture while allowing more of your evening skincare to remain where you applied it.
Naturally breathable
Silk is lightweight and breathable. Its natural temperature-regulating properties make it comfortable throughout the seasons: pleasantly cool on warmer evenings and comfortably soft when the temperature drops.
How does silk compare?
Silk vs cotton
Cotton is practical, familiar and easy to care for, but its fibres create a more textured and absorbent surface. This can produce more friction against the hair and skin and absorb more moisture and skincare products during the night.
Silk has a naturally smoother surface, allowing the hair and skin to glide across the pillowcase with less resistance. It is the better choice for those prioritising reduced friction, moisture retention and a more luxurious sleeping experience.
Silk vs bamboo
Most bedding sold as bamboo is not made directly from natural bamboo fibres. It is generally made from regenerated cellulose, commonly labelled bamboo viscose or lyocell. Bamboo-based fabrics can feel soft, breathable and comfortable, but they do not have the same natural protein-fibre structure as silk.
Silk offers an exceptionally smooth surface with minimal friction, making it particularly suited to delicate hair and facial skin. Bamboo bedding may be a soft alternative to cotton, but silk provides a distinctly refined feel and the specific qualities of a natural protein fibre.
Silk vs satin
Silk and satin are not the same thing. Silk is a natural fibre, while satin describes the way a fabric is woven. Many satin pillowcases are made from synthetic polyester.
Polyester satin can offer a smooth surface at a lower price, but it does not have the same natural breathability, moisture properties or refined feel as pure silk. Always check the material label: a shiny appearance alone does not make a pillowcase silk.
Why nook silk?
Not all silk pillowcases are made alike. nook silk uses 100% 6A-grade mulberry silk with a substantial weight of 22 momme, selected for its smooth feel, quality and durability when cared for correctly.
Our pillowcase is finished with a soft envelope closure instead of a zipper. This means there are no hard metal or plastic parts in your bed and no zipper that could catch or place unnecessary strain on the delicate fabric.
The fabric and finished pillowcase are OEKO-TEX® certified and tested for harmful substances.
A softer way to end the day
Silk does not need to be saved for special occasions. A nook silk pillowcase brings comfort to something you do every night, making bedtime feel more inviting and mornings a little smoother.
