How to care for your silk
Silk is a delicate natural fibre, but caring for it does not need to be complicated. A gentle routine will help your nook silk pillowcase stay smooth, soft and beautiful for longer.
Washing your pillowcase
Wash your pillowcase before its first use and regularly thereafter.
For machine washing:
- Turn the pillowcase inside out.
- Place it in a fine mesh laundry bag.
- Wash at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate or silk cycle.
- Use a low spin speed.
- Wash with similar colours and other delicate fabrics.
You can also wash your pillowcase by hand in cool or lukewarm water. Handle it gently and avoid soaking it for a long time.
Choose the right detergent
Always use a small amount of mild, pH-neutral detergent made for silk or delicate fabrics.
Some detergents may be labelled as suitable for silk while still containing enzymes. Always check the ingredients and choose an enzyme-free detergent. Enzymes can gradually weaken silk’s natural protein fibres, so avoiding them will help your pillowcase last longer.
Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
Drying
Do not tumble dry. After washing, gently press out excess water without twisting or wringing the fabric.
Lay the pillowcase flat or hang it to air dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Direct sunlight may weaken the fibres or affect the colour.
Ironing
Most creases will soften naturally once the pillowcase is placed on your pillow.
If ironing is needed, turn the pillowcase inside out and use the lowest temperature. Always place a clean, light-coloured cotton cloth between the iron and the silk. Never apply the iron directly to the fabric.
You can also steam the pillowcase on a low setting. Turn it inside out, place a clean, light-coloured cotton cloth between the steamer and the silk, and keep the steamer slightly away from the fabric. Do not allow the hot steamer plate or nozzle to touch the silk. Test a small, inconspicuous area first.
Treating stains
Treat stains as soon as possible. Gently dab the area with cool water and a small amount of silk-safe detergent. Do not rub, scrub or use bleach, as this can damage the fibres or leave a visible mark.
For persistent stains, professional dry cleaning is permitted.
A few things to avoid
To keep your silk at its best:
- Keep it away from rough surfaces, sharp objects and jewellery.
- Avoid direct contact with strong skincare ingredients immediately before bed.
- Do not spray perfume, hairspray or other alcohol-based products directly onto the fabric.
- Store it clean and dry, away from direct sunlight.
With gentle care, your nook silk pillowcase will remain part of your nightly routine for a long time.
