Frequently asked questions

About our silk

What is the nook silk pillowcase made from?

Our pillowcase is made from 100% long fibre, 6A grade mulberry silk with a weight of 22 momme. It has been selected for its smooth feel, quality and durability when cared for correctly.

What does 22 momme mean?

Momme is a measurement used to describe the weight and density of silk. A higher momme generally means that more silk has been used to create the fabric. At 22 momme, our pillowcase has a substantial, luxurious feel while remaining soft and breathable.

What does 6A grade mean?

6A is commonly used by silk manufacturers to indicate a high grade of mulberry silk. It refers to the quality and uniformity of the silk fibres used to create the fabric.

What is mulberry silk?

Mulberry silk is produced by silkworms that are raised on mulberry leaves. It is known for its long, fine and consistent fibres, which create a smooth and even fabric.

Is the pillowcase certified?

Yes. Our fabric and finished pillowcases are OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified. This means they have been tested for harmful substances according to the requirements of the certification.

Where is the pillowcase made?

The nook silk pillowcase is designed in the Netherlands and made by a specialist manufacturer in China. China has a long history of silk production and remains known for its silk knowledge and craftsmanship.

Why does the pillowcase have an envelope closure?

We chose an envelope closure to keep the pillow securely in place without adding hard metal or plastic parts. It also prevents a zipper from catching or placing unnecessary strain on the delicate silk fabric.

Benefits of silk

Is a silk pillowcase really worth it?

If you regularly wake up with tangled hair, frizz or sleep creases, switching to silk can make a noticeable difference. Its smooth surface creates less friction against your hair and skin while you sleep. It also makes your nightly routine feel a little more luxurious.

How does silk help hair?

Silk creates less friction than conventional cotton, allowing your hair to move more freely while you sleep. This can help reduce tangles, frizz and pulling. Results will vary depending on your hair type and routine.

How does silk help skin?

The smooth surface places less friction against the delicate skin of your face. Silk is also less absorbent than cotton, so it takes up less of your skin’s natural moisture and the products applied during your evening skincare routine.

Does silk get hot at night?

Silk is naturally lightweight and breathable. It feels comfortable against the skin and is suitable for use throughout the year.

What is the difference between silk and cotton?

Cotton is practical and easy to care for, but it has a more textured and absorbent surface. Silk is smoother and generally absorbs less moisture, making it a good choice for people who want to reduce friction against their hair and skin.

What is the difference between silk and bamboo?

Most bedding sold as bamboo is made from regenerated cellulose, such as bamboo viscose or lyocell. These fabrics can feel soft and breathable, but they do not have the same natural protein fibre structure as silk. Silk offers a particularly smooth surface and a distinctly refined feel.

Is silk the same as satin?

No. Silk is a natural fibre, while satin describes a type of weave. Many satin pillowcases are made from synthetic polyester. They may feel smooth, but they do not have the same natural fibre properties as pure silk. Always check the material label rather than relying on appearance.

Silk care

Can I machine wash my pillowcase?

Yes. Turn the pillowcase inside out, place it in a fine mesh laundry bag and wash it at a maximum of 30°C on a delicate or silk cycle. Use a low spin speed and wash it with similar colours and delicate fabrics.

What detergent should I use?

Use a small amount of mild, pH-neutral and enzyme-free detergent made for silk or delicate fabrics. Some detergents are described as suitable for silk while still containing enzymes, so always check the ingredients. Enzymes can gradually weaken silk’s natural protein fibres.

Do not use bleach or fabric softener.

Can I tumble dry silk?

No. Gently press out excess water without twisting or wringing the pillowcase. Lay it flat or hang it to air dry away from direct sunlight and heat.

Can I iron or steam the pillowcase?

Yes, but always use a low heat setting. Turn the pillowcase inside out and place a clean, light coloured cotton cloth between the silk and the iron or steamer. Never allow a hot plate or nozzle to touch the silk directly.

How often should I wash my pillowcase?

How often you wash it depends on your skin, hair and personal routine. As a general guide, washing it once a week helps keep it fresh. Always follow the care instructions to protect the silk fibres.

Why has my silk lost some of its shine?

Silk can become less lustrous when exposed to high temperatures, harsh detergents, enzymes, bleach, fabric softener or excessive friction. Natural silk may also develop a softer, more matte appearance over time. Following the care instructions will help preserve its feel and finish.
